Watch Chance the Rapper’s Surprise Visit to a Chicago Elementary School’s Career Day

This is what it looks like when a Grammy Award-winner drops in for your elementary school's career fair.

Students at Chicago’s Courtenay Elementary got a surprise Friday afternoon in the form of Grammy Award-winner Chance the Rapper joining their career fair. Chance appeared at the fair as a guest of a scheduled speaker, and students on hand said he shared information about his career journey with them.

“He inspired us to try to make our dreams come true,” Courtenay student Ethan Nguyen told dnaDNAinfo.com. “It was exciting.”

Earlier this month, Chance held a press conference and wrote a $1 million check to Chicago Public Schools as what he described as a “call to action.” The donation came after some sharp criticism of Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner.

“Governor Rauner still won’t commit to give Chicago’s kids a chance without caveats or ultimatums,” Chance told students and reporters during a March visit to Chicago’s Westcott Elementary School. “Governor Rauner, do your job.”

Based on reports from attendees, Friday’s visit took on a softer tone, as Chance posted a brief video clip of a class visit on his Instagram feed.
