Jazz Legend Al Jarreau Is Dead at 76

After retiring from touring due to various illnesses, Jazz legend Al Jarreau is dead at 76.

Multiple sources are reporting seven-time Grammy-winning Jazz musician Al Jarreau has died of unknown causes at the age of 76. According to a message on his official website, Jarreau died in Los Angeles hospital.

The pioneering Jazz contributor reportedly battled respiratory and cardiac issues, which severely limited his touring schedule. A post from Jarreau’s official Twitter account announced he was retiring from touring last week on Feb. 8 due to exhaustion. Jarreau toured and performed worldwide in various capacities for the better part of 50 years.

During his career, Jarreau collaborated with Miles Davis, Chick Corea and David Sanborn, among a host of others. In 2011, Jarreau was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

The man born Alwin Lopez Jarreau held a bachelor's degree in psychology from Ripon College and a master's degree in vocational rehabilitation from the University of Iowa. His music was sampled by a diverse group of artists ranging from De La Soul to Three 6 Mafia, Dwele and Kelis. 

Boy George, Ava DuVernay and Chaka Khan were among those sending condolences via Twitter.
