NAO, Skepta And David Bowie Named In Brits 2017 Nominations

We don't need to revisit last year's shambles and the #BritSoWhite campaign, but it looks like kicking up a stink and telling them how wrong they were worked.

On Saturday night, the Brit Awards announced the full list of nominations for this year's ceremony. We don't need to revisit last year's shambles and the #BritSoWhite campaign. Suffice to say, kicking up a stink and telling them how wrong they were seems to have worked. With Skepta and Craig David leading the charge (as well as nominations for Kano, Michael Kiwanuka, NAO, Stormzy and more still in the international categories), our complaints about a lack of diversity have at least been taken on board and the voting system shakeup seems to have worked.

The winner of the Critics' Choice award has already been announced as Rag N Bone Man, but the rest of the categories are very tightly contested. Best album, for example, could go to pretty much anyone, though Bowie and Skepta are the favourites. Those two are also in the running for Best Male Solo Artist against Craig David, Kano and Michael Kiwanuka, with no clear winner in sight yet. Whoever wins, and it looks likely that Skepta will win something, it's encouraging to see the Brits moving towards a more representative awards ceremony for British music.
