It's probably fair to say that we live in some troubled times in this country. Between the toxicity surrounding the current presidential campaign along with the many cases of police brutality and racial profiling, it seems like every day there's some new event pushing us to our collective limits. Lauryn Hill seems to feel the same way and has decided to release an updated version of her song “Rebel/I Find It Hard To Say” as a way of speaking out.
“Rebel/I Find It Hard To Say” appeared originally on her live MTV Unplugged No. 2.0 album that was released back in 2002. The touching song was inspired by the death of Amadou Diallo, a 23-year old immigrant from Ghana who was shot and killed by four New York City plain clothes police officers. Diallo was unarmed at the time and was fired upon after pulling his wallet out of his pocket. All four officers were tried on charges of second degree murder and were acquitted.
In sharing this new version of the song, Hill delivered a simple message: "Old tune, new version, same context, even more relevant now: sick and tired of being sick and tired." It's plain to see what she means given the recent deaths of unarmed black citizens like Eric Garner, Alton Sterling, and Walter Scott to name but a very few at the hands of police officers.
