Last night, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis released their latest record, "White Privilege II," and it featured a lyric from Macklemore that touched on cultural appropriation in music. The Seattle rapper took it a step further by rattling off a few names of artists who have been criticized for this very issue, including Iggy Azalea, Miley Cyrus, and Elvis Presley. Clearly, Iggy wasn't all that pleased with the way Macklemore identified her. In a response to a fan on Twitter who asked her how she felt about the Macklemore diss, she said, "He shouldn't have spent the last 3 yrs having friendly convos and taking pictures together at events etc if those were his feelings."
For reference, Macklemore's lyric is: "You've exploited and stolen the music, the moment/The magic, the passion, the fashion you toy with/The culture was never yours to make better/You're Miley, you're Elvis, you're Iggy Azalea." One thing to note is that Macklemore takes himself to task over cultural appropriation on the song as well, so it will be interesting to see how this plays out between him and Iggy.
