There are few albums more anticipated right now than Selena Gomez's second studio album, Revival, due out next month. And in a new interview with the New York Times, she described how "growing and changing" affected the process of this album. "I was in a relationship, and I was being managed by my parents, and I was still under Hollywood and Disney, and I was being held to this expectation of being the good girl," she said. It's growing up that also led her to the decision to fire her momager, an awkward experience that Selena could best likened to the experience of “a kid going to college.”

The unavoidable topic of her past relationship with Justin Bieber was also discussed. Referencing their current parallel success (Justin is sky-rocketing the charts with his record-breaking single "What Do You Mean?"), Selena explained, “While people were writing that I was stupid for being in it, this is what I always saw in him,” she said. “I’m like, duh!”

Selena also went on to talk about her other very public relationship: her friendship with Taylor Swift. “Taylor is a lot more trusting than I am,” she said. “I have trust issues, given my situation. She’s very open, so she brings out this other side of me.” It's also Taylor who summarized best where Selena is in her life right now. “In the last two years, I’ve seen Selena start to make her career her own,” Taylor told the Times. “She’s separated her opinion out and prioritized it above anyone else’s. Her childhood was defined by working hard, with the major business decisions primarily being made by others. The coolest part of watching her grow up has been seeing her gradually take the creative reins and start to steer the ship.”

Watch Selena's just-released video for "Same Old Love" below and look for Revival out Oct. 9.
