It's safe to say that we're now well past the "resurgence" stage in today's grime discussion. Thanks in part to the illumination of Skepta on the worldwide stage, the underdogs of the scene now have a chance to keep those broken down doors wide open; it's a new day and the possibilities are endless. Invigorated by these new voices that have come through—each with a patented cadence and assured delivery—the British underground genre is in cycle again, which for us long-time supporters is a pleasure to witness. As you're probably well aware by now, we're big on grime here at Complex. We revel in the old and always discern the new, so we decided to let the two meet on our debut mixtape: #GRIMETIMEWARP Vol. 1.
Ten risings emcees were selected by myself—Joseph 'JP' Patterson—and tasked with lacing instrumentals as OG as their favourite spitters. First and foremost, this project is a celebration of the past and the present, reminding us of the DIY greatness grime once held whilst sharing sonic history with a post-Drake-grime generation. The tape features some of the genre's brightest talents of right now, as well as the off-kilter productions that's helped build the most forward-facing movement since the rioting days of punk.
