So far, hip-hop in 2015 has been defined by long budding stars fully establishing themselves at the forefront of rap and complicated rap albums that ain't got no hits. But no matter what year it is there are always new artists who are beginning their ascent to the top. Enter Towkio: A Chicago native that's half Mexican and half Japanese who made some ahh, waves, this year with his mixtape, .Wav Theory.

Even if you haven't heard the entire tape, you've probably heard his breakout song, the Chance The Rapper assisted "Heaven Only Knows" which has racked up an impressive 15 million plays on Towkio's SoundCloud. Meanwhile, his song "Involved" which features Vic Mensa has also scored over a million plays as well. As you might have guessed, Towkio came up alongside Vic, Chance, and Joey Purp as a member of the Chicago collective SaveMoney. We wanted to know more about Towkio so we caught up with him in Chicago to talk about how he got his name, how he got down with SaveMoney, and how Lil Wayne influenced his style.
