Morrissey Says Major Labels Are Force-Feeding Ed Sheeran And Sam Smith to The Public

Morrissey goes full Morrissey with comments on Ed Sheeran and the current state of pop music.

If you're anything like me (please be like me), then you have a certain affinity for profoundly divisive figures in pop culture — a certain penchant for championing those ruffling the greatest amount of feathers and (more often than not) pushing pop culture forward to its next evolutionary step. Kanye Westembodies that ethos perhaps more than anyone else in music today, except — of course — his vegan-friendly counterpart Morrissey.

In a new interview with Boulder Weekly, Morrissey takes aim at what he considers an increasingly falsified current musical climate. "There are no bands or singers who become successful without overwhelming marketing," says Morrissey. "Everything is stringently controlled, obvious and predictable, and has exactly the same content. So, we are now in the era of marketed pop stars, which means that the labels fully control the charts, and consequently the public has lost interest."

Adding that it's profoundly rare for a record label of healthy financial weight to ever do anything truly "good" for music, Morrissey then added a certain specificity to his indictment. "We are force-fed such [artists] as Ed Sheeran and Sam Smith," he says, "which at least means that things can’t possibly get any worse. It is sad, though. There’s no spontaneity now, and it all seems to be unsalvageable."

Never change, Morrissey. Never change.
