It's been something like 18 hours since Meek Mill finally released his sophomore album (and first album in over two and a half years) Dreams Worth More Than Money, and after a few listens the project is definitely worth the wait. Meek was clearly very methodical when selecting his tracklist—several songs that have been released in the interim didn't make the cut, from current chart-topper "Monster," to the should've-been-a-smash "B Boy." But in the last year Meek kept fans satiated with music teases on his Instagram, some of which awarded glimpses of early iterations of the tracklist on his hard drive. One title that quickly caught attention: a song labeled "Scarface," of which there were multiple versions, one that appears to feature Jay Z and Nipsey Hussle, and an even more blockbuster guest billing: Jay Z and Nas.
Cliche title notwithstanding, hearing veteran coke rapper, 92 Bricks Hov talking that blow alongside a contemporary slinger sounded awesome on paper. A snippet of the track that leaked months ago reveals "Scarface" is what is now "Stand Up," the penultimate track on the album. This being Meek, I expected "Scarface" to be a typical MMG banger. But if there was any beat on the album that sounds ready-made for NY vets Jay and Nas to glide over, wow, they probably did work on it. What the hell happened here? Did they even actually lay verses or was the song just a concept that never actually came to fruition? This beat could've inspired god-level bars, who knows, it might've toppled "Success" as the best Jay-Nas collab to date. I need answers, Meek.
