Bay Area rap icon The Jacka was shot in killed in Oakland last night around 8:15 local time, according to CBS San Francisco. The Jacka, whose real name is Dominic Newton, was an influential member of the Bay Area rap scene, with his career stretching back to the '90s as a member of the group Mob Figaz. While mostly known for his work in the underground hip-hop scene, The Jacka most recently worked with Freeway on their project, Highway Robbery LP, which they released last year.

Following the tragic news of The Jacka's passing, a number of members of the hip-hop community, such as DJ Mustard, Freddie Gibbs, Jake One, DJ Premier, and many more have taken to social media to mourn the loss. As of now, no suspects have been identified in the case, but we will continue to update when details are made available.
