Newtown, Conn. officials arrived at the decision to destroy the home where Adam Lanza resided prior to his 2012 mass-shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School

The Associated Press reports that neighbors had urged local officials to demolish the home, calling it a "constant reminder" of the tragedy. Last night, the Newtown Legislative Council approved a proposal to tear the home down and keep it a permanent open space.

On Dec. 14, 2012, the 20-year-old Lanza killed his mother at the home before traveling to Sandy Hook Elementary School and killing 20 children and six teachers. Lanza later committed suicide.

According to the Associated Press, First Selectwoman Pat Llodra estimated that the demolition would cost about $27,000. Phillip Carroll, a member of the Legislative Council, said the money could be taken from the $260,000 left over from a Sandy Hook fundraiser which generated $1.2 million.

The home, which the Lanza family moved into in 1998, has remained vacant since the tragedy.
