Kode9 and The Spaceape Have One Thing to Say: "The Devil Is A Liar"

Preach!

None

It seems like a lifetime ago that Kode9 and The Spaceape released their 2011 album, Black Sun. Three years later, and the Hyperdub power couple are gearing up to release a new EP, Killing Season, on September 27). The lead song from the five-track EP, "The Devil Is A Liar", imbues a sense of mysticism and dread with rattling drums and a dark yet vaguely tropical melody—a sinister and brutal take on the late night end of the trap spectrum.

Supposedly, Killing Season is an expansion on some of themes explored on The Spaceape's 2012 Haitian-inspired EP, Xorcism. The accompanying video for 'The Devil Is A Liar' is an involving, after-hours war dance with more than a passing allusion to voodoo and the occult. As engaging as it is disorienting, the overall feeling inspired in the viewer is one of discomfort and fear. The eponymous refrain says it all: "The devil is a liar!"
