Mississippi rapper Big Sant has been building a buzz in recent weeks by sharing tracks like the deliberate, David Banner-produced "Fire Water II," featuring Tito Lopez and Big K.R.I.T. and the shit-talking remix to "2 Much," featuring Houston rappers DeLorean and KillaKyleon. Both of those songs appear on his mixtape, The Great American Mattress Sale, the follow-up to 2012's MFxOG.
Like its art gallery-riffing cover, it's a work that manages to be at turns clever, occasionally too on-the-nose and uniquely entertaining. Sant raps hard and dutifully, putting the listener into a zone but never letting things get too comfortable. Steeped in dense lyricism and jam-packed with equally wordy guests like K.R.I.T., King Mez, and Phonte and Rapper Big Pooh of Little Brother, it will appeal to those with a retro-minded sensibility. It's also unmistakably Southern—in additioned to all the aforementioned Mississippians, North Carolinians and Houstonians, Paul Wall also makes an appearance on highlight "Soda Water." It's an all-around solid tape that should help Sant find more attention.
