How do your favorite rappers write their rhymes? To find out, Complex TV has started a new series, The Process. Hosted by Hot 97's Peter Rosenberg and shot at New York City's legendary Chung King Studios, The Process features intimate conversations with established legends as well as exciting up-and-comers about how they put their rhymes together and the magic that happens when the pen hits the pad. New episodes of The Process premiere every Tuesday on Complex TV.
In the second episode of The Process with Peter Rosenberg, Eve breaks down how she got into the rap game. Eve states she initially started out as a singer, which then transitioned into writing rhymes for herself. "It was much more fun to write a rap record that was mine, that was my words that I could perform," she said.
Eve also details her tenure with Ruff Ryders. "It was like hip-hop boot camp," she recounts. "If they were in the studio 24 hours, I was there 24 hours. They didn't take it lightly on me." Eve touches on a handful of records like "Gotta Man," and "Blow Your Mind," the later of which Dr. Dre produced. While "Blow Your Mind" would eventually earn the Philadelphia rapper her first Grammy, she explains her sessions with Dre weren't as smooth as one would expect. "It was always a scream session at the end. He got the best shit out of me like that, period," declares Eve.
