A couple years back, Don Trip seemed to be living a fairy tale. His track "Letter to My Son," a heartfelt chest-beating anthem for fathers' rights advocates nationally, grabbed the attention of superproducers Cool and Dre, then, in 2011, Dr. Dre and Interscope records.

The rapper's affecting, sincere rap style seemed destined to connect with a hip-hop audience; he received attention from Diddy to Dwayne Wade to DJ Khaled. He received a remix of his original "Letter to My Son" with Cee Lo on the hook. Trip made the cover of the 2012 XXL Freshman issue, alongside rappers who have since gone on to greater things, including Future, Danny Brown, Macklemore, and fellow Interscope signees French Montana and Machine Gun Kelly.

Unlike French and MGK, though, Don Trip no longer appears on Interscope's website. What industry buzz there was has been replaced with a firm handshake and not much press attention.

Trip still releases strong material, though. Last year's Help is On the Way mixtape had some strong material, especially "Hold Back Tears." His latest video—which features cameos from fellow Memphis regional stars Starlito, Yo Gotti, and Young Dolph—is another solid record, one that should be more widely recognized.
