Complex founder Marc Ecko and Alicia Keys talk about armageddon, royal powers, and home bar essentials in "M.E. Against the World."

This feature appears in Complex's December 2012/January 2013 issue.

HOW DO YOU THINK THE WORLD WILL END?

Marc Ecko: With complete disregard for the humans on it. It’ll either be really cold or really hot, and not nearly as acute or dramatic as Hollywood and the end-days folks would like it to be. The end will be long and drawn-out, how most life ends—death by a thousand little pricks.

Alicia Keys: I hope this doesn’t happen, that we can fix it, but at this point I think the world will end by our foolishness—taking everything and not replenishing it. The planet will be depleted to the point where it can’t exist.

IF YOU WERE ROYALTY, HOW WOULD YOU USE YOUR POWER AND INFLUENCE?

ME: “Mary-Kate and Ashley,” like Kanye said. Unless there’s some new world order where royals have meaningful power again, I couldn’t do much more than use my position to be rock-and-roll with it.

AK: I am royalty. I believe in helping people, and even if it’s only one person that I can help, that makes a big difference.

WHAT ITEM HAS TO BE IN YOUR HOME BAR AT ALL TIMES?

ME: Any kind of brown, distilled, spirit: bourbon, scotch, whiskey. I need liquid bread at all times. They don’t have to be single malt, either. I like a range of flavors, from peaty to smoky to sweet. They all taste better after the first one anyway.

AK: I’m not a crazy drinker. I’m not into that, but my husband loves those Dom Pérignon bottles that light up. Very cool. So we tend to have those.
