WHY COMPLEX IS CO-SIGNING IT:Jack White (of The White Stripes and The Raconteurs fame) has yet to disappoint us with his many musical projects and Horehound is not an exception. This time, he's called upon singer Alison Mosshart of The Kills, guitarist Dean Fertita of Queens of the Stone Age, and bassist Jack Lawrence of The Raconteurs to create The Dead Weather—a blues-infused alternative rock band that gives off an inexplicable coolness. There's no word of any of the members leaving their original bands, so we're taking this album as a side project put together by a super-talented foursome...
The album sounds like classic rock, but its elements make it edgier and more modern. Mosshart's vocals are sexy, the lyrics are dark, and the combination of psychedelic guitars and drum intricacies make up the band's unique sound. Even though the supergroup is comprised of some of alt rock's big names, it still has that organic garage band-feel as if all the tracks were produced in a basement.
"60 Feet Tall" is a great opening track because it introduces you to Mosshart's voice accompanied by a hypnotizing bassline. Their first single, "Hang You from the Heavens" is a song of a woman scorned, and although it's a bit dark, the guitar riffs and drums make for a good listening experience nonetheless. TDW even cover Bob Dylan's "New Pony", which was a departure for Dylan's sound at the time, but works really well this time around. The album was recorded in White's new studio in Nashville, Tennessee, and although you can feel the southern influence in a couple of songs, The Dead Weather is by no means a country band.
