Man With Throwing Knives Reportedly Poses as Senator in Effort to Meet Ivanka at Trump Tower

The man was stopped by Secret Service and taken to a hospital for a psychiatric evaluation.

A man attempted to get inside Trump Tower in New York City Thursday to see Ivanka Trump before Secret Service spotted his bulletproof vest. The man arrived at Trump Tower around 4 p.m. local time and said he was a U.S. senator interested in speaking with Trump about her line of dresses, the New York Daily Newsreported. The man, identified as 52-year-old Adames Benitez, also told Secret Service agents he owned the building.

"Ballistic gear" was worn under Benitez's shirt, police said. The man was searched upon arrival, with authorities reportedly finding a weighted sock, a fake I.D., and two "throwing knives." Benitez was transported to nearby Weill Cornell Medical Center for a psychiatric evaluation and has since been charged in connection with the fake I.D. and weapons possession. A separate report from BuzzFeed News Friday morning noted that a court date had not been set, as Benitez was likely still in the hospital.

Earlier Thursday, Trump landed in Germany for the G-20 Summit, where she and the rest of the family were met with protests:

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio will be at one protest this weekend, serving as the keynote speaker at a demonstration put on by Hamburg Zeigt Haltung. "The Mayor will be sharing New York and American values with an international audience that we worry only sees and hears from our President," de Blasio's press secretary Eric Phillips toldBloomberg Thursday. "Sharing our values and aggressively representing New Yorkers at home and abroad helps keep our city’s needs and strengths at the forefront of an important discussion."

Though (for some reason) this is the first directly Trump-related post we've done in nearly a week, don't let that push you to start tuning out the reality TV president's daily atrocities. There's still a lot going on, it's all awful, and Google is—at least in this sense—your friend.
