Trayvon Martin dreamed of learning to fly airplanes or becoming an airline mechanic. Florida Memorial University has announced it will award an honorary bachelor’s degree in aviation to Martin during its commencement ceremonies May 13.

FMU, a historically black institution, announced its decision on Facebook Wednesday.

FMU will present the degree to Martin’s parents, Tracy Martin and Sybrina Fulton. Fulton graduated from FMU.

“As we approach 50 years in Miami Gardens, this commencement holds a special place in all of our hearts,” FMU said in a statement. “Of special significance is awarding posthumously the Bachelor of Science Degree in Aviation to Trayvon Martin. Sybrina, our alum, epitomizes strength and dignity as she uplifts other victims of violence while effecting change for a more equal and just society.”

Martin was fatally shot at 17 years old by George Zimmerman in Sanford, Florida, in February 2012.

FMU will host a post-commencement fundraiser and reception to benefit its Department of Aviation and Safety and The Trayvon Martin Foundation, which is headquartered at the university.
