Russia Subway Explosion Reportedly Leaves 10 Dead, 50 Injured

At least 10 people have been killed in an explosion in St. Petersburg subway.

A subway explosion in St. Petersburg, Russia on Monday left at least 10 people dead. Russian news agencies said that several stations in the Russian city had since been closed and that an evacuation was in progress, the Associated Pressreported. Though initially reported as "twin blasts," officials later clarified that the explosion is believed to have been singular.

A spokesperson for the St. Petersburg governor confirmed that 10 people were killed and another 50 were injured in the explosion. Russian President Vladimir Putin confirmed that an investigation is being conducted to determine if the blast was a terror attack "or if there might have been some other cause." Putin also offered condolences to the victims’ families, the AP added.

Putin, according toCNN, had been in St. Petersburg for a speaking engagement early Monday but is now in Strelna. The Victory Park, Electrosila, Moscow Gate, Technological Institute, Frunzenskaya, Sennaya Ploshchad, and Gostiny Dvor metro stations have reportedly been closed.

The explosion was caused by an "unidentified device" on a train car at the Sennaya Square station. In addition to station closures, security has also been strengthened at the nearby airport.
