After claiming that President Obama tapped his phone in 2016, Donald Trump wants Congress to investigate whether the former President’s administration abused its powers, according to a statement from White House press secretary Sean Spicer.

“Reports concerning potentially politically motivated investigations immediately ahead of the 2016 election are very troubling," Spicer tweeted. “President Donald J. Trump is requesting that as part of their investigation into Russian activity, the congressional intelligence committees exercise their oversight authority to determine whether executive branch investigative powers were abused in 2016.

Spicer added that “neither the White House nor the President will comment further until such oversight is conducted."

The statement comes just a day after President Trump’s now infamous tweetstorm, in which he accused his predecessor of illegally monitoring his phone calls, despite providing zero proof. “Terrible! Just found out that Obama had my 'wires tapped' in Trump Tower just before the victory. Nothing found.” Trump tweeted, adding that the alleged wiretapping reminded him of Watergate and McCarthyism.

Spicer’s statement comes ahead of what should be a turbulent week for the Press Secretary, who’ll once again be forced to justify, spin, and defend his boss’ increasingly alarming and paranoid behavior in front of a hungry press corps. His assertion that “neither the White House nor the President” will comment on the allegations until a full investigation is conducted is an obvious attempt to close the conversation on Trump’s tweets. Unfortunately for Spicer, that’s not how this works, and the floodgates have been opened.
