James Harris Jackson, the 28-year-old white army vet who one week ago allegedly took a bus from Baltimore to New York City to "make a statement" by stabbing a black man to death with a sword, is now saying he regrets killing 66-year-old Timothy Caughman, and instead wishes he had chosen a younger victim.

According to the New York Daily News, the alleged killer said he's "sorry" he murdered Caughman, who was living in a Manhattan homeless shelter at the time, and was killed while he was collecting bottles. Jackson, who turned himself in, further claims that he was unaware that Caughman was elderly because it was so dark out, and that he wishes he had instead killed "a young thug." Jackson, who says he's hated black men since he was a child, told the paper that his crime was intended to make women reconsider interracial relationships.

He did not apply for bail, and is yet to enter a plea on the hate crime murder with which he has been charged.
