The Oxford Dictionaries may bear a striking resemblance to UrbanDictionary.com thanks some new entries reflective of the times. The terms “squad goals,” “biatch” and “drunk text” were among the latest entries published in a new update.
As one of Instagram’s more popular hashtags, Oxford didn’t repeat a mistake made by The Atlantic of attributing the term to Taylor Swift and defined squad goals as the following:
“Used in reference to a person or thing seen as a model to aspire to or emulate, especially with one’s friends (often as a hashtag in social media).”
For those keeping track of Instagram-related entries, “Fitspo” also made the cut as an official Oxford term.
The more self-explanatory entry of the bunch was drunk text, which may or may not open the door for “curved” to become an official entry into The Oxford Dictionaries. The curators defined the act of shooting an alcohol-inspired SMS as “a text message sent while drunk, typically one that is embarrassing or foolish.”
Too Short might want to ask for some royalties or at least recognition, as his elongated pronunciation of bitch made its way into The Oxford Dictionaries as the term “biatch.” While Snoop Dogg, E-40, and even Breaking Bad character Jessie Pinkman helped usher a version of bitch featuring elongated vowel sounds into the mainstream, it’s arguable that no one did it earlier or better than Oakland’s own Todd Shaw.
