On Friday night, alt-right provocateur Milo Yiannopoulos was scheduled to give a lecture at the University of Washington, and a man got shot just behind the hall where he was speaking.

Yiannopoulos, one of Complex's Worst People of 2016, is a technology journalist for Breitbart who writes articles like "The Solution to Online 'Harassment' Is Simple: Women Should Log Off." In his spare time, he's an internet troll who is infamous for harassing Ghostbusters star Leslie Jones, an action that got him banned from Twitter.

He is currently on a university speaking tour, and appearances have been met with protests and controversy—a recent event at UC Davis was shut down entirely by protesters. Friday's appearance at Washington was likewise met by hundreds of opponents, according to KOMO. The crowd turned rowdy and, by some reports, began throwing paint balloons.

People, both those trying to see the lecture and those trying to prevent it, grew restless and agitated.

The shooting took place behind Kane Hall, where the lecture was held. Details are vague, but one observer noted that the victim was a middle-aged white man. The Seattle Police Department issued a statement saying that the man had been shot in the abdomen.
