Charles Manson is going back to prison. The infamous cult leader was hospitalized earlier this week and was scheduled to undergo surgery Tuesday for gastrointestinal bleeding. According to TMZ, Manson initially refused treatment, but had a change of heart Thursday. By then, doctors determined that the 82-year-old inmate was far too weak to withstand the procedure and sent him back to California State Prison-Corcoran.
Manson’s return to the prison was confirmed rather bluntly by Terry Thornton, a spokesperson for the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. “Inmate Manson is at California State Prison-Corcoran,” she said in an email to The Los Angeles Times. "He is at the prison. I don't know how much plainer it can be."
That there’s such heavy interest surrounding the state of Manson’s health should come as no surprise. The cult killer became one of the country’s most notorious inmates after he and his group of followers were convicted of brutally murdering actress Sharon Tate and six others in 1969. Manson has been locked up ever since, and according to the Times, has been involved in multiple incidents while incarcerated, including possession of a weapon and threatening a member of the prison’s staff.
Though Manson’s original sentence was life with the possibility of parole, he’s been denied parole a whopping 12 times. With his health rapidly deteriorating, and the state’s obvious unwillingness to release him, it doesn’t look like Manson will be checking out of the Grey Bar Motel anytime soon.
