Many of America's stoned youth do little more than lounge while binge-watching cartoons. But not so for three teens who found themselves in police custody after they were busted for wearing clown masks and holding an Airsoft pistol near a Babies"R"Us in Albuquerque, New Mexico

Yep, the latest news in America's clown hysteria epidemic involves a 14-year-old and two 13-year-olds who were puffing on some loud. Then, according to KOB in New Mexico, the squad of teens reportedly "made an incredibly poor decision following in the social media trend of 'Clown Spotting.'" Classic.

The Albuquerque Police Department said that they were called to the scene for a possible robbery in progress after the three juveniles were seen wearing clown masks and holding a gun near a Babies"R"Us.

When the police showed up, the trio took off the masks and dropped the gun before fleeing on foot across a nearby interstate. They were arrested shortly after, but Officer Simon Drobik said that the teens "came close to death just by running across the freeway."

"In a split second decision as an officer or a citizen," Drobik explained, "you see this pointed in your direction, you're going to think it's a real gun." The gun turned out to be just an Airsoft gun, but Officer Simon Drobik said the gun was "basically a replica of a Baretta."

The three juveniles, who have not been identified, have been released to their parents, who probably aren't too happy with the young teens.

The APD used the incident to yet again emphasize that if you're dressed like a clown and holding what appears to be a gun, you're gonna scare the public and elicit a police response—as these kids learned the hard way.

Given how many others around the country are eager to "pop a cap" in clowns, these young three clowns should be grateful that they were only given citations.

The trio's arrests come as clown threats are shutting down schools across the country.

The good news, perhaps, is that the clowns often turn out to be immature teenagers rather than cold-blooded killers. For example, a middle school student in Virginia was recently arrested for trying to hire a clown on social media to kill her teacher. Down in Texas, a 17-year-old high school student was arrested for making terroristic threats after he turned himself in for clown threats of violence. Recently in New Jersey, three teenagers were arrested in one day for clown threat hoaxes. Kansas is arresting teens for clown threats too. Clowns are getting busted in Virginia too. Clowns are getting locked up in Alabama, Arizona, and Connecticut too.

Maybe we're getting close to the end of this clown craziness after all.
