Crime is way down in New York so far this year, in fact the crime rate is the lowest it has ever been since the NYPD started tracking crime statistics, according to CBS New York.

In 2016, there have reportedly been 10 fewer murders to date than in 2015, 97 fewer shootings, and crime overall is down 12 percent. Interestingly, New York mayor Bill de Blasio reported that "stop and frisk activity" is down 97 percent from its peak in 2011, so make of that what you will.

The news about the crime drop comes exactly a week after the first presidential debate between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton, in which Trump expressed support for the controversial stop and frisk policy, which was previously deemed unconstitutional in the way the NYPD carried it out.

Trump also argued with Clinton over whether or not the the murder rate was dropping in New York. When Clinton noted that the crime rate in the city, including murders, had continued going down since de Blasio came into office and began scaling back stop and frisk, Trump said, "No. You're wrong."

The new numbers, as well asPolitiFact's fact-check on the statement that rated Trump's words "mostly false," suggest differently.
