We need more people like Akala.
The ever-philosophical rapper has worked with The Guardian to produce a short video-essay for the 'In My Opinion' series, which sees Akala speak on the elite classes teach us a distorted history of Britain.
Akala argues that instead of being taught the stories of people like William Cuffay, a disabled black man who led the 19th century movement for free speech, or the miners' strike of the 1980s, we're only educated about history from the point-of-view of elites:
"Which of the traditions of the people of this island will you identify with? The one that promotes and reinforces race and class oppression...or the one of relentless activism that secured the very fragile freedoms we have today?"
Enlightening.
