A New Mexico mother and son face prison time for their incestuous relationship. Monica Mares and Caleb Peterson are currently living separately in Clovis, N.M. following a no-contact court order the Daily Mail reported. 36-year-old Mares, a mother of nine, and 19-year-old Peterson started their romantic relationship weeks after Mares saw Peterson for the first time last Christmas after giving him up for adoption.

In an exclusive interview with the Daily Mail, Mares and Peterson talked about how the relationship became romantic and eventually, sexual.

Mares told the Daily Mail Online she made the first move and told Peterson, "I'm sorry I don't know how you are going to react to this. I'm your mom and you're my son, but I'm falling in love with you." She recalled him responding with: "You know what I am too. I was scared to let you know." However, Peterson told the Daily Mail Online he was the one that made the first move one day kissing Mares.

The couple then kept their relationship a secret, but authorities learned about it after police arrived at their home when a neighbor confronted the couple about their relationship, FOX 59 reported.

"He is the love of my life and I don't want to lose him. My kids love him, my whole family does. Nothing can come between us not courts, or jail, nothing," Mares told the Daily Mail. Mares even said if she had to choose between her other kids and Peterson, she'd choose him.

The couple told the Daily Mail Online they were both willing to go to jail, as long as they could be together in the end.

"It is every bit worth it," Mares said about being apart from Peterson. "If they lock me up for love then they lock me up. There is no way anybody could pull us apart, and I really do love him."

Mares and Peterson could each face 18 months of jail time for the incest charges.

Overseas a mother and son also romantically involved in the UK ran from the law after going public with their taboo relationship and revealing they wanted to have a baby.
