A 29-year-old father in Centennial, Colorado is facing charges after he told investigators that he intentionally caused a horrific car crash in an attempt to kill his son. Fox News 4reported that Nathan Weitzel is now facing first degree murder and other charges related to the attempted killing of his 2-year-old son in the August 21 crash.

In addition to first degree murder, Weitzel is charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance, child abuse, second degree assault, criminal mischief, and vehicular assault. According the account that Weitzel gave to Arapahoe County sheriff's deputies, he was driving his car between 65 and 75 miles an hour and intentionally rammed into a parked vehicle.

Weitzel also said he tried to kill his son because fatherhood is a big responsibility and he didn't feel "man enough" for the task, according to Fox News 4. Weitzel shared custody of his son—who survived the crash with serious injuries including a broken leg and concussion—with the boy's mother, Nancy Lopez.

"There's no words," Lopez said. "I just fell to the floor and I started crying and I kept saying, my baby boy, my poor boy."

Fox News 4 reported that Weitzel tried to cut his own throat at the scene of the crash and tried to fight off firefighters who arrived at the scene. The little boy is now recovering at home.
