UPDATE (7/19/16 10:45 a.m. ET):

ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack in a notice on Tuesday.

The announcement came after investigators found a hand-painted flag of the terrorist group in the room of the 17-year-old refugee who carried out the attack. According to the New York Times, notes in his room indicated he may have self-radicalized, and he is believed to have acted alone. Three passengers were seriously injured in the attack and an additional 14 passengers are being treated for shock.

An attacker reportedly wielding an axe and a knife left several people injured—some seriously—aboard a commuter train in Germany Monday night, according to multiple reports citing German authorities.

Early reports claimed that as many as 20 people were injured in the attack, though that number was later reduced to four, with more than a dozen others being treated for "shock," the BBC reported. The New York Times reports that three of those people were seriously injured, and one had minor injuries.

The attacker was shot and killed by police officers as he tried to flee the scene. The Guardian, citing a Bavarian official, writes that the deceased attacker was a 17-year-old native of Afghanistan. The train was on its way from Würzburg to Ochsenfurt.
