Another round of "Hey look! A thing that kinda looks like another thing!" has the internet sweating bullets over the potential confirmation of a sea monster's existence. A viral video purporting to show a "massive disturbance" in the water near Antarctica points to a Google Earth mystery hanging out around Deception Island, an island with a surprisingly apt name.
The measurements given in YouTube user wowforreeel's monster-loving video show that the mystery creature is quite large indeed, leading many to believe that a monster doth dwell:
For those not in the know when it comes to things like sea monsters and The Kraken and what not, here's a quick rundown from someone who knows even less: Using this Google Earth finding as the latest batch of supposed proof, lots of people are once again convinced that a gigantic squid-like creature of unknown dangers regularly walks swims among us. So the question then becomes, as a scientist might say, sea monster or nah?
If, however, they had pulled up a nautical chart, they would have realized that this is Sail Rock, a well mapped outcropping that, from the sea, looks a bit like a ship under sail.
"This looks like The Kraken," UFO Sightings Dailysays of the Google Earth finding. "I used Google ruler and it says this is 30 meters (100 feet) from head to end, but the end looks like just the mid area of a giant squid, which means it could be 60+ meters long with tentacles. That sounds like a Kraken to me."
According to Andrew David Thaler of Southern Fried Science, however, there may be another explanation for this "massive" disturbance in the sea: a rock. Noting that those excited by the prospects of a sea monster had failed to dig "just a little bit deeper," Thaler explained his disappointing revelation:
Bummer. At least we do have the actual existence of extraterrestrial life to look forward to.
