Omar Mateen's Wife Reportedly Tried to Talk Him Out of Orlando Shooting, Drove Him to Club (UPDATE)

Omar Mateen's wife reportedly drove him to Orlando's Pulse nightclub before the shooting, and tried to talk him out of it.

UPDATE 06/17/16 3:51 p.m. ET: Law enforcement officials have confirmed to CNN that the Orlando shooter "exchanged text messages" with his wife during the Pulse nightclub shooting. On June 12, roughly two hours after the attack began, Omar Mateen texted his wife, Noor Salman, to ask if she'd seen any news of the attack. Salman reportedly texted him at one point, saying she loved him. She also reportedly tried calling Mateen "several times" during the ensuing standoff:

The timing of her calls came after reports of the attack had emerged, and apparently after she realized her husband might be responsible. He didn't answer, the official said.

Omar Mateen, the man who fatally shot 49 people, at a gay nightclub in Orlando on Sunday, was reportedly driven there by his wife. The FBI told NBC News that Noor Zahi Salman, also known as Noor Mateen, tried to persuade her husband from committing the massacre.

It's possible that Noor Mateen could face charges for her involvement in the shooting, but none have been formally announced yet, NBC News reported.  In a statement to Complex, the FBI declined to provide details, saying, "We are in the midst of a very active investigation. We have no update on the investigation at this time."

The incident, which was the worst mass shooting in U.S. history, happened at Pulse nightclub on Sunday around 2 a.m., local time. A SWAT team arrived on scene, and killed Omar Mateen. Prior to the shooting, Mateen had called 911 to profess his allegiance to the Islamic State, which later claimed responsibility.

In the ensuing days, politicians and religious leaders everywhere have denounced the shooting, with President Barack Obama calling it an act of terror. Vigils and demonstrations of solidarity took place all over the U.S. and the world, showing support for the victims, survivors, and their loved ones.

The Orlando Police Department told Complex that it is not responding to individual press queries at this time.
