Two months ago DeRay Mckesson announced his bid to run for the mayor of Baltimore. A politician and civil rights activist affiliated with Black Lives Matter, Mckesson participated in the momentous protests that took place in Ferguson, Mo. and Baltimore which highlighted egregious race-related injustices such as police brutality. While the odds remain stacked against him, Mckesson wants you to know that he is still running for mayor and is looking forward to the primary.

Mckesson's resolute attitude is admirable, but it's going to take a miraculous turn of events for him to be elected the 50th mayor of Baltimore, the city where he was born. Mckesson has yet to register even one percent in the polls, and The New York Times Magazine recently ran a headline with the jarring statement, "DeRay Mckesson Won't Be Elected Mayor of Baltimore," Mashable reports

I'm running to be the next Mayor of Baltimore & I need your help! You can volunteer from wherever you are: https://t.co/BL8gj6J7CW

Several local activists don't take Mckesson seriously, and more experienced politicians have dismissed him as an overzealous young man who doesn't exactly understand what he's doing. In a recent interview, Mckesson voiced his frustration with people asking "if this is serious or not."

Despite the naysayers, Mckesson looks forward to the Democratic primary on April 26, which will essentially decide who will go on to win the general election. It's extremely unlikely that he'll win, but his participation and determination represent changing political tides and deserve some positive recognition.
