According to figures from the Brussels Metro Authority, 15 people were killed and 55 wounded after an explosion rocked a subway station. 11 other people have been reported as dead following two additional explosions at Brussels Airport, CNN reports. According to an airline official, one airport explosion occurred near the security checkpoint and another near the airline check-in counters. The explosion at the subway station reportedly occurred in the Maelbeek district near the European quarter, CNN reports. "Terrorists struck Brussels but it was Europe that was targeted—and all the world that is concerned," French President Francois Hollande said in a statement, as quoted by the Associated Press.

Just last week, Paris attacks suspect Salah Abdeslam was arrested in Brussels following a violent shootout. During a previous raid in the Forest suburb of the Belgian capital, Mohamed Belkaid—another Paris attacks suspect—was reportedly shot and killed. As of Tuesday morning, the attacks in Brussels had not been directly linked to Abdeslam’s arrest. However, as reported by CNN, Belgian authorities are considering the explosions part of a coordinated terrorist attack. With the threat alert in Brussels currently at its highest level, the U.S. Embassy in the region is urging Americans in Belgium to "stay where they are and avoid public transportation," AP reports.
